Like many metal bands of the late 90s, System of a Down struck a balance between 1980s thrash metal and early 90s alternative rock along the lines of Jane's Addiction. With the release of their eponymous debut album in 1998, they secured a place on the legendary Ozzfest Tour. System became a gold record and laid the foundation for the release of Toxicity in 2001, a job that allowed the band to carve out a space in first in the new nu-metal landscape and to conquer new fans all over the world and to collect numerous platinum records.
