Rod Stewart was born in London in 1945, and is therefore English, despite his much-vaunted Scottish football allegiances. Football was his first vocation, and the blond Rod came close to signing a professional contract, but his passion for music, which began when he sang in skiffle bands in London, grew stronger when he joined folk singer Wizza Jones on a European tour as a backing vocalist. In 1964, he joined and left several British blues bands, playing with John Paul Jones, future Led Zeppelin, Mick Fleetwood, Julie Driscoll and Long John Baldry's Steampacket.
