Rod Stewart was born in London in 1945, and is therefore English, despite his much-vaunted Scottish football allegiances. Football was his first vocation, and the blond Rod came close to signing a professional contract, but his passion for music, which began when he sang in skiffle bands in London, grew stronger when he joined folk singer Wizza Jones on a European tour as a backing vocalist. In 1964, he joined and left several British blues bands, playing with John Paul Jones, future Led Zeppelin, Mick Fleetwood, Julie Driscoll and Long John Baldry's Steampacket. Finally, Stewart entered Jeff Beck's orbit, where he met Ron Wood, with whom he formed an important friendship.
