Kanye West was born in 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia, and from an early age demonstrated a flair for poetry. He began composing rhymes, approaching hip hop in the latter half of the 1990s. But his first successes came as a producer for Roc-a-fella, going so far as to mix a couple of tracks for Jay-Z's "Blueprint" album. There West already showcases all of his talent and one of the defining characteristics of his work, which is the ability to sample well-known tracks. In 2002 he released the single "Through the wire," based on a personal experience, which swept the American music scene.
