Ricky Martin was born on 24 December 1971 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. From the age of six, he began to make his mark in the world of show business with appearances in TV adverts. At the age of twelve, he passed the audition to join Menudo, a teenage boy band hugely popular in Spanish-speaking countries and active since 1977. After five years with the group, in 1989 he was forced to leave the band (reserved for teenage singer-dancers) having reached the age limit. In the 1990s, after working in Mexican television, he joined the cast of the musical ‘Les Misérables’ on Broadway; and in 1994 he joined the cast of ‘General Hospital’.
