Rod Evans (vocals), Nick Simper (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) and Ian Paice (drums), the so-called ‘Mark 1 line-up’, made their debut in 1968 with "SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE. Moderate success came with the subsequent singles: ‘Hush’ - a cover of Joe South - and ‘Kentucky Woman’ by Neil Diamond. In 1969, THE BOOK OF TALIESYN and DEEP PURPLE were released. The failure of the American record company was decisive in causing some rethinking within the group, and Simper and Evans were replaced by two members of Episode 6, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover. The band first attempted the “progressive” path dear to Lord with CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA, but Glover and Blackmore pushed to follow Led Zeppelin in the race to emphasise the “hard rock” of blues riffs, and with this spirit [continue on Rockol]
