Christmas Markets are a must of the winter season.

Every year, from the end of November to the Epiphany, their colors invade the streets and the squares, creating a fantastic atmosphere for young and old people. Unfortunately, this year we will not be allowed to appreciate their beauty. Because of the health emergency, in fact, all the markets have been canceled!

This means that we must wait at least another year before we can immerse ourselves in the magic of Christmas again. However, nothing prevents us from travelling with our imagination. <span '="" id="s2_7">That is why today we decided to take you to discover some of the most loved markets in Italy!

    Aosta

The Marché Vert Noel catapults you into a unique atmosphere and invites you to lose yourself pleasantly in a riot of colors and scents: it is extended among more than 50 chalets rich in local artistic productions, DOC and DOP food and wine products, skillful local handicrafts. The main square of the city is used as a skating rink at the foot of a sumptuous fir tree decorated for the occasion.

    Arezzo

Even though it was established recently, Arezzo’s Market is one of the most evocative markets in Tuscany. Piazza Grande welcomes wooden houses, the large Tyrolean hut and a large market where you can buy statues and characters of the crib from all regions of Italy. The Tuscan tradition is combined with the Tyrolean, Austrian and German exhibitors, who flock to square. The show is completed by the house of Santa Claus, the dinners in the hut, the Ferris wheel, the ice rink and guided tours in the historic center of the city.

    Asiago

The small town of Vicenza, built on the homonymous plateau, houses the so-called "Christmas gardens", a large market that houses a wide variety of items: from wood to glass, through ceramics, as well as the sweets of local pastries, while the typical mulled wine warms the cold mountain days.

    Bolzano

It is the largest and oldest market in Italy, in fact the first edition dates to 1991. In Bolzano you can relive a dip in the most genuine past, when the fir trees were adorned with small decorations of everyday life, like red apples or straw ribbons. On December 6, the day of Saint Nicholas, it is customary to parade the saint who distributes delicacies to good children and Krampus, monstrous creatures which look like devils, to punish bad children.

    Gubbio

Here Christmas is really a big party. In addition to the many wooden houses that decorate the center, the Umbrian town holds the record to set up the largest Christmas tree in the world: lights of various colors are arranged on the slopes of the mountain that surrounds the village, generating an absolutely unique chromatic effect. The lighting is always an iconic event that creates union among the inhabitants: in 2014 it was done by Pope Francis. The tree can also be observed by the large Ferris wheel that is mounted for the occasion. The market is also embellished by many rides, the sleigh of Santa Claus and the tourist train.

    Matera

It is impossible not to mention Matera, among the centers of the Southern Italy: the city, which already remembers a crib, during Christmas offers its best part. In fact, if the snow does not fall from the sky, the market is whitened with artificial snow. Everything is topped with stalls, illuminations, ice rinks and much more to delight visitors of every age.

    Merano

The picturesque town hosts some of the most beautiful Italian markets. They stretch between the Teatro bridge and the Posta bridge, crossed by the Passirio torrent, a stone’s throw from the famous thermal baths. The various stands offer products belonging to the gastronomic tradition and folklore of South Tyrol.

    Polignano a Mare

The Apulian town is transformed into a charming bright village, where the luxuries of Christmas marry with the tradition of the place. In fact, in the streets of the center stand the typical illuminations that report the verses of the songs of Domenico Modugno, famous singer native of Polignano and Pino Pascali, versatile artist native of the place as well. The village is animated with the flag-wavers and musicians of Oria, as well as various shows and street artists.

    Trento

During the Christmas period, Trent is transformed into the City of Christmas: a magical crib full of tradition, lights and colors. In addition to the exhibition and sale of products, the city offers a real journey to discover the excellence of Trentino, with tastings and live demonstrations.
A majestic Christmas tree stands in the center of Piazza Duomo and a Train takes children to discover the beauty of the city.
Icing on the cake, every year Santa Claus welcomes the children in his house.

    Verona

The city cut in two by the Adige, illuminated by hundreds of lights, hosts 100 wooden houses located in the background of the Roman Arena. A traditional market is organized between 10 and 13 December. In this market there are many sweets and carousels, and every year Santa Lucia comes with her donkey to bring candy and coal to the children. The Arena hosts 400 types of nativity scenes from the most important international museums and the symbolic manifestation of the rising star.

Have you already visited any of these markets? Which is your favorite one? Let us know in the comments!
